Where can I buy wood for my smoker? I just moved to Utah from Tx and can not find any reasonable pricing on wood. I had used Hickory, Mesquite and Pecan in TX, but realize that these are not available here. Please let me know a good wood source. Thanks.

Hey, Tex... Welcome to Utah.... Always glad to have another fellow Texan who likes to Que up here...

Hate to tell you this my friend, but you now live where good smokin' wood is not all that prevalent... Standard Wood in SLC will carry some hickory... I tried their white oak once and didn't care for it... Can't get any pecan from them, either... We have some apple and cherry in this area that does pretty nicely, but you have to look around for it...

Best bet is to make a trip back to Texas from time to time (as I did this summer) and bring a trailer full back... Berry Brothers in Phoenix (they have a website) appears to have nice wood like you are looking for - but they are 12 hours away... There is also a source I am aware of back up in Washington, but it is a drive there as well...

Getting wood shipped in might work, but it is still expensive as the dickens especially if you don't order in a large quantity (i.e., go in with several others and split the cost)...

No real easy answers for the stick burner here in Utah I am afraid... Doesn't mean you can't do it, you just have to "work a little harder" to do it...

Well if your looking for an easy supply in Utah it just doesn't happen. I will be headed to Texas later in the year and plan on picking up a load. Let me know if this interests you at all.

I'm interested. What do I need to do?
Utah has an abundant supply of fruit wood: apple, cherry, peach, apricot, pear, etc. Find a local orchard.

Let me know when you will be going to TX for the wood. I am interested in buying when you go.
There are many orchards on Hwys. 89-91 thru Willard and Perry, just South of Brigham City. Lots of orchards in Utah and Juab counties also, unless the developers got there since I was last through those parts. Several years now. I think pruning comes prior to Spring, while it's still cold. Then you need to let the branches set for a year or more to dry out.
Dang, :lol: the more I hear/read about smoking and or smokers the more I appreciate my Traeger.

Crashpilot, where do you live. Most towns still have remnants of orchards sprinkled throughout.
Brian and I look for friends and Neighbors who oak, pecan, fruit trees cut down and offer to do the work for them if we can keep the wood. other than my trip to Texas this spring where i brought back about a chord of red oak (i love that stuff) we've pretty much cooked off of the stuff we've cut out of people's yards as a "service" to them.
Crashpilots' in Rock Springs, WY. Cottonwood is all they have up there, oh and sagebrush. Sorry CP had to pitch in.
I assumed the wasatch front. If wood is scarce, don't get a stick burner. With a WSM, Cookshack, etc you can get by using the wood chunks from Wal-Mart or Cabela's. A 10 pound bag should last a good while.

Yeah, I'm in the middle of sagebrush/cottonwood country. I posted the question one day here about maybe using aspen and the consensus here was it proabably wouldn't work. I've always got some aspen hanging around the house from camping in the mountains and someday when I've got 14 hours to waste, I might still try it. LOL

Till then, I'm going to stick with what I know will work. Right now I've got a Silver Smoker that I use charcoal for heat and some cherry wood chunks from a bag for seasoning (not as much as I used to, T. Don't want to belch smoke rings) and that will hold me over until I get my poop in a group and start hauling some wood from the orchards mentioned on the Wasatch Front. I haven't contacted anybody yet, but I'm really hoping that they're going to be begging me to get rid of thier excess fruit wood.
