Wood Restart - Larry Jacobs - 12-13-2011 02:13 PM

Say you used a weed burner to start your sticks on fire. You then preheat your pit with wood fire only, then put on the meat. After falling asleep you awake to find your pit is down to 150 and your fire is near dead. Since you can not remove the meat, should you:
1) Turn on the LPG weed burner speeding restarting your fire. (Some of the LPG heat might cook the meat)
2) Start a new fire outside the pit then move the wood into the firebox after it is burning good.
3) Try restarting fire with kindling.
4) Steal some fire from the Tumbleweed team when his fire watch guy falls asleep.

You just purchased a new stick burner and you're thinking about sleep???

If you are cooking at home you do it any way you want!

If you are cooking in a competition, you should start more fuel outside of the pit with the weed burner, and then transfer it into the pit, because to use the weed burner in the pit, would be a DQ if you get caught.

You can also remove and put back the meat, what you can't do is remove the pork, separate it into smaller pieces than the lump it originally was, then returning less than the original to the smoker.

The other things that would help would be to build a charcoal box, so that you can maintain a good coal bed, you can maintain it with charcoal or wood burned down to coals.

As a stick burner you want to take your time getting your pit up to temperature, 45 - 60 minutes is nothing for bigger pits, and once you learn what it takes to keep a small hot fire burning in your pit, you will learn to hear the alarm, turn it off and reset it, roll out of your zero gravity chair, put another split or two on the fire and roll back into your chair and fall asleep, it will soon feel like it's all routine!
