Happy it all went off well for you guys!

How did it go on the peoples choice what did folks end up turning out for the public?

Respice, adspice, prospice. Latin proverb.
Respice = you didn't use enough spice the first time! adspice = you ought to add spice, you know? prospice = you should be an advocate for spice!

Re: Cedar City Backyard results
Thanks Chris,

It went a little better than I expected since this was the first time anything like this has taken place at the arena, or even in this area for that matter. The board in charge of the festival and the arena were thrilled with the event and have already greased the skids to make it bigger and better next year. Once the dust settles, I will meet with those in charge and begin laying the ground work for next time. They have alot of ideas so I need to see if a pro contest can be put together and still give them what they want. This particular festival is scheduled around the sheep guys bringing the herds off the mountain and in a smaller way when the deer hunt happens.

Long story short, very soon I will know what the date of the festival is next year and then, hopefully, I can begin work on getting a sanction together and see if it will be possible...

The people's choice worked out well. I was not exactly sure how it was going to happen and even up to the last minute we were changing the format. We ended up getting 44 racks of ribs donated so every team got 4 racks. The teams were also allowed to bring and cook more if they wanted and we advertised that we would only sell 100 packets for the tasting. The teams used any extra ribs they had left over after turn ins and cleaned the meat off the bones into decent sized pieces. The people went around to all the team areas and got a chance to talk to them and taste the meat. Each packet had 5 tickets in it so they would drop a ticket in a small bucket at the team area if they liked the meat. We kept close tabs as the tickets were being sold and once we got to a point that the teams were running out of food, we stopped selling packets. I think we ended up selling right around 90, (in about 40 minutes) so all in all it worked out good. It was a learning experience that's for sure and like I said before, it was the only thing the organizers of the festival really asked us to do so I felt that somehow, someway I needed to make it work.

Thanks again,

Bert.

I would like to thank Bert for all of his hard work, both in putting this together and the day of the event. This was my first competition and it was a blast. Again thanks to Bert, he worked his tail off.

Re: Cedar City Backyard results
Way to Cedar City folks. Just the fact that you got that many teams competing in a first time contest in a lesser populated part of the state tells us that Utah is no longer just a Dutch oven state. The fact that locals held their own against more experienced teams is very impressive. Lets hope that BBQ in Cedar City becomes like theater has.

Re: Cedar City Backyard results
Thanks guys,

It was a great time and I had a good time putting it together. The organizers were exceptional to deal with and they were really impressed with the people involved. There is a chance that next year they may try to incorporate the Dutch Oven contest to coincide with the BBQ contest. Basically, they are very open to making this a very big event. The festival usually gets between 3,000 and 5,000 people that attend so it is a good way to promote just about anything to do with cooking.

Thanks again and I'll keep you apprised of the progress for next year.

Bert.

Re: Cedar City Backyard results
You could make it real authentic by having everyone catch a sheep going down Main Street, kill and dress it and cook it. Boy, would that make the PITA blog!

Re: Cedar City Backyard results
Yeah, but don't think that is too far fetched. The Wool growers association has a big stake in the festival and they may be a bigger part of it next year. Maybe we can have more points given if you can catch one, dock it, shear it and cook it all in time for turn in...with garnish..

Here is a write up that is in our local paper. Some pretty good press and for the first time that I can remember, I was not mis-quoted..
