A Cold Day in .............
What a day yesterday was. The Mrs. started a couple of butts for me in the 075 Traeger draped with an old quilt for heat retention on the back porch yesterday morning about 9:30. It was near midnight when the things got to temp. 13 1/2# raw weight. Weird. I didn't think they'd take that long. I even jacked up the stat to 325*. Maple isn't the hottest of burning woods I know, but that's what was at hand. Tastes good tho.

Re: A Cold Day in .............
I had some butts (6) from the same case this past summer that took an excessively long time to get to internal temp, too, Gene... Three different cooks - 2 butts each time - and all 3 times they took their "jolly good time"... It definitely happens... Thank goodness you weren't at a comp with 30 minutes before turn-in!!

A very Happy New Year to you and the Mrs... Hope the knees, and their therapy, are coming along well... Especially just in case you decide to set off some fireworks tomorrow night and need to get out of the way in a hurry!!! (And I ain't talkin' about "fireworks" with your wife, either!! )

Gene:

It's been quite a winter already in the Cache Valley! Hey, do you just use a normal schmo quilt? I have some movers blankets laying around and thought about draping one of those over my 075, but have been worried about burning them (I prefer my fires in the smoker). I'm still working on the best method to smoke in winter. A few weeks ago I was smoking in a snowstorm and melted a small section of a tarp to the back of my 075. I was using it to keep the smoker dry.

In the spring I'm building a detatched garage and am looking at adding a "smoking porch" to the side of it. It would be vented so that smoke would escape while protecting the contraption from the elements. We'll see how that works.

Hey you two. Thanks Mike, PT is coming along ok. They have some pretty cute gals as assistants that sorta keep an ol cuss like me returning for the agony. Makes it worth the pain & aches.
I don't know no schmos, Gallo, 'cept............ ah never mind. It's an old quilt with the batting and just tied. It has a nice smoky patina to it. Bet if it got washed it'd disintergrate. I'm going to get a welding blanket one day soon for these cases.

I'm going to try and lean a couple of 2x4's against the UDS and drape my movers blanket over that while I smoke some ribs today, kind of like a tepee. 8) I'll let ya know how that works out. Smile

It does snow in Mesa, at least it did a couple of times during the fifteen years I lived there. Of course not much more than an 1/8" but it's still snow to them. Smile

Arlie, next time you see Kellie would you ask her why she's not returning my calls??? I'm starting to feel like she's avoiding me!
