Dinner for some deserving returning Vets
Hello everyone. I hope you had a great Christmas and I wish you all the best in 2009. On January 10 I am going to have a dinner for some returning vets from Iraq and Afghanstan. I was wondering if some of you would be willing to hop in and help me out with this. It looks like there could possibly be around 100 people at this dinner. I am talking to Sams Club about helping out with the meat. If some of you could make some side dishes or even some desserts that would be awesome. I feel more than ever, we owe a larger debt of gratitude to these young men for the freedoms we enjoy each day, than we could ever give them. If your interested please just post here.

Where, when and what's on the menu?

Jonathan - As we discussed on the phone last night, I can't be there to help, but I'll get a shipment of my rub and sauce out ASAP.

Well here is what is on the menu. Pulled pork that T is going to cook, ribs, chicken that we will cook onsite the day of the dinner, potato salad, smoked beans, rolls, and if I could get some desserts that would be awesome. Soezzy I will get the address posted out here as soon as I can get it. I should have it today. It will be in Lehi so those coming from SLC it's pretty close. Doug I would love to have your help. Your always there to give and I appreciate that alot. Dave I will PM my address to you as well. Thanks to all who are jumping to help make this dinner a good one for those who served.

I'm in. I'll work on the dessert. I'm working on ideas, and posted on the forum for suggestions. If anyone has any ideas for a nice treat let me know.

I'd love to help with desserts too. Could make a big batch of frog-eye salad or some brownies. I'm just down the street from Lehi so let me know what else I can do to help.

Might be a good time to pick up that WSM lid too. hahaha

I would love to do some desserts for the cause. I would be willing to bring my smoker down and smoke up some of my famous apple pies right on site. Give me a call if you are still looking for some help.

Re: Dinner for some deserving returning Vets
Carla, That would be awesome to have you do that.. I know they would like it. I really want to say to everyone thanks so much for your support with this. The address is 1530 West Pheasant Point Drive. It is at a LDS Ward Chapel. It is off the first Lehi exit where the Lehi Blcok Company is at. Google maps or MapQuest can help out with the directions.

Seeing as I don't have a cooking job to do on the day, if there's anything else needed, valet parking, sign carrying, litter collection, let me know as I intend to be there start to finish, if at all possible.

Re: Dinner for some deserving returning Vets
Well here is what I am looking to do on Saturday. I would like everyone to meet around 10:00 a.m. I will have a list of things we need to accomplish. If you think you don't have anything to do we can still use you, if nothing else this is a good chance for all of us to get together in the middle of the winter and have a good time. As for things to do we will have potato salad to make up and beans to put together, and meat to get on the pits, and then just a lot of BS to throw around. Looking forward to a good time with all of you.

By popular demand my wife has been asked to make a half-dozen apple pies for the event. We will be baking them Saturday morning and have them down there in plenty of time for the event.

I want to wish the best to all of my UBBQA brothers and sisters supporting this event. You folks are doing a great thing for some troops that will certainly appreciate it more than you'll ever know. It's times like these that show how truly special BBQ folks are. Jonathan, thanks so much for your effort in organizing this.

Godspeed,
John

Re: Dinner for some deserving returning Vets
Just got home from the dinner. Was a great day hanging out with Richard, Jonathan, Dan, Chuck, Chris x 2, Norm, Linda, Lyle and D'Lana, Mike, Rob, T, John (PatioDaddio ... in spirit) and anybody else I might have missed. We fed a lot of folks tonight and they all seemed to be enjoying everything.

Thanks to Jonathan for organizing this great event to celebrate these 2 heros. It's a great privilege to be associated with the fabulous folks in this association.
