Thanks for posting the information about the Hog Heaven Cook-off with the PG Kiwanis Club. I appreciate your help getting the word out. One thing that should be changed is the date. The event is September 11th & 12th. Thanks.

This is for all you cooks that think they may want to compete. This is a perfect "give it a try" event. There is not an entry fee, and they provide the meat to cook. You will need to cook pork butt and pork ribs. On the application it asks if you can cook a lot of meat. Don't let that stop you from cooking. If there is not enough cookers to cook all the meat, there will be some of us that will cook to make sure all the meat they have is cooked. This is a perfect opportunity to get your feet wet.
It doesn't even matter what you cook on. So all you new cooks or those looking to give competition bbq a try, this is your chance to really give it a go!!

That sure was good stuff!

Thanks Flexo and SoEzzy for clearing things up. I didn't think we could cook this one as we can't do big volumes yet. Sure was fun lending our moral support last year. Great crowds. Utah county is great, we don't care what they say about you. Smile

My home comp is giving me a headache tonight!

I'll post it after getting the kids off to school in the morning.

I'm thinking of using this as my first comp but am concerned with point 6 on the rules - "Each team will be required to cook between 4-5 15 lb butts and 15-25 slabs spare ribs." I have no where NEAR the cooking space to do this level of cooking. All I have at this point is a single drum and a small offset. With this, I might be able to get 2-3 butts and 6-8 slabs.

I would love to participate but if they are firm on the cooking quantity requirement, I'll have to pass this one up. Is it possible to get an 'official' ruling on the quantity requirement so those of us newbie's who are short on equipment can make a decision?

Hey Aaron,

I wouldn't let that stop you. I would call them and let them know you want to cook it. I will send you the number shortley when I can look it up .

Don't let the space stop you. All they care about is getting all the meat cooked and there are usually teams with big smokers to cook it all. This is about all that I cooked last year at this comp and they had no problem. I plan on being there this year again (I think). Jump in and do a comp. This is a good one because they supply the meat.

For all that want to try a hand at this one, go ahead and sign up. I have talked to Mike on this and there will be enough cookers to cover what you can't get in your smoker.

That sure was good stuff!

Great - will be talking to my wife tonight and begging her to agree to help me out. She has the food handlers permit and since this is a req, will have to have her there. As I'm still VERY green around the gills here, still have a lot of stuff I need to get put together for an actual comp. I'll be working on trying to get all this over the next few weeks if she agrees.

One (maybe) last question - will there be room near the event to park an RV? Even though we're in WVC, it would be good to have somewhere nearby that is comfortable for an hour or two of sleep and a spot for the wife and kids to rest/sleep when they're not helping out in the middle of the night.

Thanks this does help. Will I need to ask for any special permissions to do so? I would hate to pull the beast all the way down to find out I have to camp out at Wal-mart across town.

Home comp? Now is that your home companion as in home teaching companion or is it home companion as in your wife that's giving you the headache? Or are you cooking a home competition tonight to practice a little and not being able to get bite through skin is giving you a headache or is this just another of those British terms that none of us get??? Inquiring minds want to know!

Who all will be at this one? This will be my first attempt at a comp and am counting on some moral support to get me through my first near all nighter.

Will have one UDS, a semi-crappy but reliable offset, and hopefully everything else that I'll need to get my first call....
