Thanks for the heads up.
Man I wish my Home Depot still sold the Rancher charcoal from The Original Charcoal Company.
Now that was some good charcoal with a good smell & hardly any ash. I'm down to my last 3 bags now.

Re: Kingsford on sale
The Rancher was / is organic briquettes not lump, they hold them together with yucca juice or some such organic product, and they don't have coal dust or mineral fillers and binders like Kingsford does.

I still have 3 bags left and I really liked the product, if anyone finds it out here, give us a all a heads up, I'd take 20 - 30 bags if I can find them cheap, ($5.00 or so), than the pallet price of around $10.00 / bag. 60 to the pallet.

This is what it says about the Rancher Briquettes on the company's website:

"100% All-Natural hardwood Briquette charcoal. This is the ultimate briquette for those who are more comfortable with briquet, but want lump flavor, heat, and length burn profile of hardwood charcoal. Perfect for grilling and smoking."

All I know is I really liked the product & would like to have it available here in the Salt Lake area again.
I sent an email to them asking about availability around here. Hopefully I get a response.

Re: Kingsford on sale
Home Depot in Ogden has lump charcol, I thought it was OC Rancher because it was in the same color of bag -- until I picked it up. I asked the person working in the area about the charcol and all I got was some bogus answer -- in other words she didn't know.

Re: Kingsford on sale
Was the charcoal you found at Home Dopot Cowboy lump charcoal? That is the brand they sell at Lowe's. I don't like it because it burns too fast. I am not sure how much real hardwood is used to make it. I prefer Kingsford Charwood lump charcoal. It is more dense, burns hotter and lasts longer. I buy it at a local grocery store here in Logan. It comes in 10 lb. bags for about $8.00. they usually only stock about 4 bags on the shelf so I buy 2 or 3 at a time. I have not found it anywhere else.

That's what it was!! I've never used lump in by WSM's -- maybe I should give it a try.

I've also read other people saying to stay away from the Cowboy lump charcoal.
I have used Royal Oak lump from Walmart in my WSM & kettle with good success.
I just liked the OC Rancher better because it performed like lump but had the uniform briquette size that doesn't fall through my charcoal grate.

I just sent an e-mail to Home Depot requesting information as to whether they will be carry the brand and asking them to consider stocking it on their shelves. I'll post info as soon as they respond.

Re: Kingsford on sale
I have never found any lump charcoal at our local Wal-Mart but I am going to ask about the Royal Oak. I will also look for the OC Rancher briquettes at our Home Depot. Thanks for all the information.

Re: Kingsford on sale
The Rancher briquettes have been the subject of many a long discussion on the bbq brethern board. Several of the members there have contacted HD and been told that they will not be carrying it this year. There have even been some that contacted the manufacterer who confirmed that. bummer, I liked it too...

I have purchased Royal Oak at the Lowes in Layton last fall; I'm not sure if is still there or not. I'll stop by on my way home today and report.

Here's the reply I got from Eric from The Original Charcoal Company regarding the availability of the Rancher Charcoal here in Utah:

Hi Jeff,
"Thank you for your interest.
Our 100% all-natural hardwood LUMP charcoal is in COSTCO at a great
price. It is a sell-through item, so won't be there long. PLEASE tell
everyone, as the sooner it goes the sooner we have a more permanent
arrangement.
Thank y ou again,
Eric"

I went to my closest Costco at about 1800 W 300 S in SLC, but all they have is Kingsford.
Oh well, If anyone sees their charcoal at their local Costco let us know.

Yep, Home Depot has the twin bags of Kingsford 21.6lb each so that's 43.2lb for about $9.97. Great price, beats Costco. I now have 7 bags. Keep on smokin'

I was luck enough to have the hiding place of some Rancher Briquettes pointed out to me this week, so I grabbed them up.

I also found another more organic briquette in the Royal Oak or Kroger (same briquettes different names) made in Tennessee, I haven't been able to find them in the Smith's I've visited, but "the naked whiz" gives them quite a good review, worth grabbing a bag and testing them out if you see them around.

The one in Layton. But when I checked at the one in Riverdale they didn't have any. I had a coupon for $3.00 off two bags but it is expired now. Sad

But hey, Luckily I still have 6 18lb bags left. soon to be 5. I'm smoking lots this summer.

Gene,
Any idea what these guys are talking about...
We just go to one of several dealers buy a bag of pecan or oak or cherry or... (the list is up to 20 or more) go home and dump it in the bin and start smokin.

Sounds a bit complicated to me...
