Get Your Pig On Barbecue Competition
"Carnivores rejoice! Secure your plastic bibs and head to the Get Your Pig on Barbecue Event in Fountain Hills, Arizona, about 30 miles northeast of Phoenix. The inaugural two-day barbecue festival and celebration is sanctioned by Kansas City Barbecue Society, the worldâs largest organization of barbecue and grilling enthusiasts. And itâs all overseen by Arlie Bragg, Americaâs premier barbecue organizer, having run more cook-offs than any other person in America. (In other words, this isnât just another clique of yahoos turning a spit over a fire). Bragg, well, brags, âThe worst barbecue you eat [at this competition] will still be the best thing you ever had!â Itâs Iron Chef in 30-gallon cowboy hats, slathered in sauce, with the âsecret ingredientâ provided by the National Pork Board, as barbecue teams from several states descend on the Fort McDowell Rodeo Fairgrounds to compete for more than $12,000 in cash, prizes, and bragging rights. All in all, itâs good eats, folks. If that doesnât get you drooling, the local Jeep dealership will have dozens of brand-new vehicles on hand for guests to test drive on one-and-a-half miles of off-road track. Once youâve pounded some pig and rolled a Jeep, be sure to visit the Beer Garden and let us know if brewskis grow on trees or in the dirt. To flesh out the Charlotteâs Web vibe, inflatable jumpers, pony rides, and a petting zoo will be available for the littles. Stop by the Bashaâs Sampling Pavilion, where you can collect samples of many different items carried in its stores. Plus, meet local merchants and enjoy their offerings of jewelry, clothing, candles, home furnishings, and more. If youâre still on the fence, figure this: A portion of the proceeds goes to 100 Club of Arizona, a non-profit benefitting the families of public safety officers and firefighters when tragedy strikes."
