Brinkmann smoker
Hey guys, I have a Brinkmann Electric smoker that does a great job, but have been wanting to try out a charcoal smoker, discover the joys, ya know? So I was wondering if I would be able to just take out the electric unit and use it with charcoal, or if I would need another smoker?

Re: Brinkmann smoker
Dude, I would seriously recommend taking the relatively painless plunge into a Weber Smokey Mountain (WSM) or, for a little more (this is blasphemy for me), a Pro Q Frontier with a Stacker. If it were me, I'd go with the latter, or wait for the even better Pro Q Excel 20, which is due to ship in May or June.

Do it, and thank me later. Smile

Re: Brinkmann smoker
Anthony,

I second everything John just said, it's well worth the investment!! I don't know anything about the Pro Q but I own three WSM's -- the first one I bought five years ago. There is still time to ship either one in; the advantage is you and your new smoker will be taking the class with world-class cooks who will fill your brain so full of info you'll need ear plugs to keep it all from leaking out!! Tongue

IMHO it's an opportunity that won't come around very often. If a smoker doesn't come in on time for you, please let me know and I'll loan you my newest WSM -- it's only been used once.

Thanks for the advice guys! The only difficulty is that my hobby has to pay for itself, i.e. I need to profit from a comp or otherwise before I can buy a new smoker, so if you guys know of any low cost-/free-entry comps that I may have a chance to win, let me know.

I know I sound ignorant, but whats IMHO?

Hey Big Anthony,

If you find anybody willing to share that secret, or any other info, let me know. Cause I think i'm a little behind on equipment cost vs. comp winnings. Smile

Amen to that, Z!

Big A - A hobby that pays for itself is called a business. Big Grin  Seriously, though, I don't know of many hobbies that pay their own way, and competition BBQ is certainly not one of them (for the vast, vast majority). I tried starting last season with the "make it pay for itself" mantra, and I failed miserably. The best most of us can hope for is to cover our entry fee, and maybe our travel expenses, and that's on a very good day, downhill both ways, with a tailwind. Big Grin

That's a fact John. The bummer part of that is when that hobby becomes a business the tax man  is standing there wanting the lions share of what you struggled to earn.

Thanks for the input guys! I should have known that since it's something I love to do, it probably wouldn't pay for itself .
In that case, does anyone have an old smoker a novice like me could start out on? It would be nice not to have to be within 15 feet of an outlet every time I want to smoke something Smile

I must say, though, BBQ will probably be more lucrative than trying to sell off my whittling work - i tried to make a husky once, but it came out more like a lumpy panda bear
I can't wait to be part of my first comp, even if I do fail miserably - I've been looking forward to it since I first saw BBQ week on food network a few years back. I hope I can at least pass something off as edible to the judges Smile

Re: Brinkmann smoker
Big A! You will do just fine at your first comp. The only thing I wanted to see happen at my first comp. was to have my times down as to be able to turn all 4 boxes in, and also work out the bugs as far as who is doing what and when. Taking notes and or making up a time line as to what needs to be done is key to taking the pressure off ya, Example when to prep meat, start coal. time to put on, and so on. then you will find more time to hang out and relax, knowing you are under control for an hour or two!

Any ?? you have were here to help

Re: Brinkmann smoker
Hey Big A! Congrats on your new/ used cooker! If you need a good cleaner for that pit see my post on pit cleaners, great stuff there. I do think you may need it, cause that pit GBQ gave you hasnt seen a scrub brush for a while, I think it was 1977, I think T's Raiders beat the Vikings in the SuperBowl that year Tongue Yea! 32-14 Raiders Win  GBQ just wasn't the same after that loss, and the pit kinda took a beating, as did his Vikings

I heard the NFL season game schedules are out for 2008-09. I can't say nuthin bad 'bout GBQ. He packed half my stuff up after Hyrum last year while I took the other half of my stuff home. That was an act of a true friend. Thanks again Gary.

Yo, You know that was not the intention of my post. That event kicked our butts. Stuff happens. See ya Friday. Pepsi is on board. We need to make a couple of radio spots for them for this contest. 8)
