Interesting poll taken
Just saw on another website a poll being taken. The question is. Should pellet cookers be legal to compete with?
The poll is aprox. 24hrs old, there are 500+ votes, 53% yes,47% no :?
I honestly didnt think it would be that close

Re: Interesting poll taken
Interesting.

I wonder how close it would be if those with Stumps gravity feed or pellet poopers had to be woken up every 45 minutes - an hour all through the night like the stick burners?

Respice, adspice, prospice. Latin proverb.
Respice = you didn't use enough spice the first time! adspice = you ought to add spice, you know? prospice = you should be an advocate for spice!

Re: Interesting poll taken
When you get right down to it, this whole question is silly. IMHO you should be able to bring ANY heat source to a contest. Hell's Bell's, if you can figure a way to cook a brisket that gets a call to the stage, I don't care if you use a microwave!
The "purists" position can only result in new rule #1. All contestants must wear loincloths and the cooker shall consist of 9 rocks and a grill of wood or willows! In addition, no outside heat source shall be used to start any fires! This shall exclude all, but not limited to, matches flammable liquids, spark initiators, magnesium, magnifying objects etc. In addition, any sauces or rubs, shall consist of spices that are ground and or prepared on site with stone mortise and pestle. All spices and rubs shall consist of those herbs and spices that are completely indigenous to the physical location of the competition.

Do I think pellet poopers should be legal in contests? No

Do I think pellet poopers should be banned from contests? No

And I agree with Jim. I think they should let in gassers or whatever. I've got trailer gasser model that turns out some awesome stuff...I would not hesitate to turn it in at a contest. If you let in pellet poopers I see no difference in letting in gassers. But you can't ban them now. People have invested too much money into these legal electric devices.

I love it. This subject comes up every off season..can you spell b-o-r-e-d

Re: Interesting poll taken
Not many people I've seen in our Q contests I'd want to see in a loin cloth :?
So in this new rule #1, one would be using a bow and drill or flint and steel to get his/her fire lit. F&S not a problem, a bow and drill, not much yucca wood here abouts, the best for friction fire building, IMHO.

I havent voted, no reason to as it will never change. That industry/market is to large for that to happen. And whenI said I didnt think it would be that close, I was just suprised that that many people had a problem with pellet pooper

I am still laughing…
After reading the first post in this thread my thoughts were similar to what Cyclops wrote, I was trying to figure out how to phrase it when I read Cyclops post, he put it more eloquently then I would have, so let me just say I agree with his post.

Re: Interesting poll taken
I don't think it's a point about how you start your fire as to how you keep it going while your meat's on. Just what I've heard from other cooks out there.

Re: Interesting poll taken
So Dave, what is the site this poll is being conducted on?
I started with charcoal and chunks back when.
Then I found out about Traegers. No more wood and charcoal for this fella.
Like Cyclops stated earlier, open wood fires, hot rocks, willows, runnin' around in deer skins, etc., that's the original way. We've progressed far from that.

Re: Interesting poll taken
I'm with Cyclops......open it up, bring what you got, and if a microwave brisket beats a stickburner brisket, then so be it.

If you want to keep bbq contests "traditional," then no cookers should be allowed. Everyone must dig holes and cook the meat on green-wood grills. No metal cooking apparatuses allowed. Only indigenous spices and woods can be used, and no sauce. Judges must eat with their hands and wear loin cloths. Only natural range beef, pork, and chickens allowed, and the cook must kill the animal on site with their bare hands or a club.

Re: Interesting poll taken
Well here is the way I see it .....IMHO You can cook on an off set, tending to the fire/ temp control all night, or you can run WSM,for the first 2-3 hrs. watch and lock it in at your temp. ( with no major weather to deal with) or you can cook on a pellet cooker, not to many variables there other than mechanical/ electrical problems.

So with that being said, The real question is how much time do you wish to tend to your pit and your cooking progress, to produce, in your own opinion, the best product you can! The opinion of a cook that uses a pellet cooker toward a cook that uses a WSM or a BDS could be the same as that of a WSM or BDS cook toward a cook that uses an off-set. I personally would never own an off-set, so I can't hold it against pellet guys for going the easier way  Its really not that big of deal to me when a pellet guy sets up next to me at a comp and is getting his rest during the night, that just means that I can get my rest too
