Turn your Weber grill into a water smoker
This looks interesting ... a way to convert your 22 inch Weber Grill into a water smoker for about $45

Smokinator for 22" Weber

Re: Turn your Weber grill into a water smoker
Carla,

I've always wondered about the Smokinator, given that I'd never smoked on a kettle. It does look interesting indeed.

I was in SoCal last week and while I was there I did my first cook on a brand new Weber 22" kettle. I did two small (about 5 lbs. each) picnics on it using nothing but an aluminum pan full of water with about 15 Kingsford briquettes on each side (with a mix of two-thirds cherry wood and one-thirfd hickory). Ironically, I think they may have been the best pulled pork I've ever cooked. The color, smoke ring and flavor were outstanding.

I guess my point is that you may be able to achieve the same, or similar, results the old-school way. Given the price of the Smokinator, I would probably stick with the cheap method.

Has anyone ever used one of these and would mind sharing what they think?

Patio, before I bought a smoker, all I ever used was a Weber to cook pulled pork. I made some great pork, judging from the amount of sandwiches that my family & friends scarfed down. The smoker makes it a lot easier to control the heat, but the Weber can do the job. (I did it the same as you with a pan filled with water/apple juice and charcoal on both sides.) I would like to try this Smokenator just to see how it works.

Here is the official Smokenator Link.

I have one, and the Hovergrill too (which is handy), and although I'm far from being a pitmaster it does seem like the Smokenator holds a steady, low temperature longer and easier than I can get by indirect heat from briquettes on the sides of a pan. It seems like a good way to turn a kettle into a smoker, for folks who can't afford a separate smoker.

This is off topic, but is anyone aware of any good sources of meat (especially ribs), or of fruit wood, in Utah County?

Try Standard Wood in SLC. They have apple and cherry in a big bag for around $15, sorry it isn't in Utah County, but at least there is one around to help us Que'rs. The address and contact info is on the home page.

I'm not sure about the smokinator, but I have used the Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker, which I think is the best inexpensive smoker on the market. It gives great results nearly every time, and doesn't require mods to your existing grill.
