Hog Heaven Pleasant Grove Sept 10-11 Registrations
I received an email that the Pleasant Grove Hog Heaven cook off will be Sept 10-11. This is a perfect event for first time cooks. There is no entry fee, and they provide the ribs and pork butts. I am working with them to change some wording in their documents, but you do not need a food handlers permit (they use a blanket one) you cook as much as you can. The cooks will cook as much as they can, then the meat is turned back in and they sell it to the public. The cooks pick out what ribs and pork butt they want to turn in for judging. Judging is done by mostly Utah BBQ Association judges. This is always a good time. I will get some more info, but I wanted to get the dates out there so you can plan to cook.

Can't make it this time around. Had fun last year and will say for all the other backyard pro's, this is a good teeth cutting event. I wish I could be there but will be getting back the same day from a business trip to Australia and will be too tired to even think of cooking..

Re: Hog Heaven Pleasant Grove Sept 10-11
Here is some more information. I am still trying to get the sign up forms for the Kiwanis club. So if you are interested in cooking in this event, send me a PM so we get an idea of how many will be cooking.
I really want new cooks, those that are even thinking about cooking in a competition to come out to this. There is NO entry fee, and your meat is provided. Come and cook on whatever you have, gas, electric, propane, wood, charcoal it is all welcome. Don't worry about capacity on how much you can cook, come compete and we will make sure the Kiwanis are taken care of. I am trying to take away any excuses that you may have about competing in a contest. This is a perfect one to cut your teeth on. Many of us will be there to give advice and to help out. So get out and DO IT!

Schedule
Friday Sept 10th check in after 12:00 noon
3:00 pm Meat will be available to pick up.
7:30 pm Dinner will be provided by the Kiwanis Club

Saturday Sept. 11th
7:00 AM Breakfast provided by the Lions Club
4:00 PM Ribs turn in
4:30 PM Pork turn in

This will be like a regular contest, You will be provided turn in boxes. We will go by the Utah BBQ Association rules.
Again please PM me if you want to compete.

That sure was good stuff!

Many thanks. Just moved here a few weeks ago from Boston, MA and would like to participate in a few local events. Sounds like a great way to get started.

Thanks, MOAB.

Not officially. I'm afraid I was too busy with school. I did pick up a few tricks of the trade though: Maple Sugar! Great New England rub secret for Pork!

If you need judges the Wife and I would like to do this. Also have a friend that would like to take a judging class but would like to judge a competition first.

Have a great day

Wish I could make it this year. But I'll be up in WA saying goodbye to my son who's headed off to Germany for a few years with the Army.

I know there are some of you sitting on the fence trying to decide if you want or should cook in this competition. Well the answer is YES!! You will not find a better competition to get your feet wet. We really would like to get as many new cooks out that we can. Some of us more experienced teams will be there to help out with some advice and encouragement to make your cook an enjoyable one. You will be glad you cooked in this one!!!! So come on out!!!

I'll echo Flexo n this one, "You will be glad you cooked in this one!!!! So come on out!!!"

I've taken part in this cook as a gofor, a judge, a scorer and this year as a cook's second assistant bottle washer and chair holder upper!

Even if you only have room for 3 butts and 3 racks of ribs, this is a great one to just give it a go at, bring something to cook on, an EZup or canopy for some shade, a table or two, some chairs, coolers for a cold beverage or two, some charcoal and rubs, foil, fire extinguisher and a 'can do' attitude and you'll have the best 36 hours of your BBQ life.

Re: Hog Heaven Pleasant Grove Sept 10-11 Registrations
Really looking forward to this weekend, friends. Long time, serious student of the art of BBQ, but this will be my first ever cook off/competition. I would like to review the Utah BBQ Association rules. Anyone provide a link to survey the information and/or advise?

Thanks,

No naked dancing in the park during the hours of daylight, no digging pits in the grass for your fire.

OK so the second is a rule and the first is a suggestion, the event is run by the Kiwanis Club with a little assistance where needed.

Here are the general Utah BBQ Organization rules for competitions, click the link below to download a copy to your computer.

Re: Hog Heaven Pleasant Grove Sept 10-11 Registrations
A couple of modifications to the rules SOEZZY posted are......and these modifications are for the Hog Heaven contest only.

You may use charcoal, wood, propane, electricity. What ever you want to cook on.
No meat inspection, because the meat will be supplied by the Kiwanis.
We will be cooking only Pork shoulder and Pork ribs.

If you are cooking with a UDS or other cooker that will be sitting on the ground, please bring some bricks or something to elevate it off the ground so that we do not scorch the grass.

That sure was good stuff!

Added to the Grass rules by Flexo.

If you know that your cooker drips grease, please make sure you have something to catch the grease so as not to make a mess in your alloted space.

Re: Hog Heaven Pleasant Grove Sept 10-11 Registrations
So clarification on the pulled pork issue. I have been known to pull the pork, add a finishing sauce, and then return the pulled pork to the smoker in order for the sauce to glaze. If I'm interpreting the rules correctly, this process is not allowed?

That is correct. In a contest, once the meat has been pulled or sliced it cannot go back into the cooker. You can warm your sauce if you want before putting it on the meat.

Man, that makes for some precise cooking/timing if one hopes to serve warm meat. So when you say they'll be providing shoulder are we cooking "whole" shoulder or butts?

It is pork butt. The judges are told not to judge meat on temperature. Long story short..... In contests with more teams, there is not a way to guarantee that your turn in would make it to the judges warm, so they are asked not to judge either way of hot or cold.

That sure was good stuff!
