Re: Backyard BBQ Competition
A few more quick notes:
Carla asked a question concerning camp trailers and vehicles being able to be on the lawn. Sorry, but the answer is no. We asked if we could and were told no cars, trucks, motor homes or camp trailers on the lawn where we are competing. We can drive in to unload if you are back out by 7:30am. We were told that we could use the smaller type cargo trailer, but the areas must be kept clean and professional looking. As always, we need to stress keeping our areas clean. The Health Inspector will be at the city event and will probably stop by our competition.

I will provide an ash barrel and a waste water barrel (SORRY, NO GREASE).

Also, because we are on the lawn. if your heat source is anywhere near the ground, please bring adequate cover for the ground (like plywood).

You must leave your site spotless when you leave!

This is looking like it will be a lot of fun. Come out and cook!

Re: Backyard BBQ Competition
The park opens at 7:00am they are alowing cars to drive back till 8:00 and then they all have to be moved so the car show can move in. So depending on how long it will take to unload, any thing going out or in after 8 will have to be caried in by hand. Thanks

Re: Backyard BBQ Competition
Thank you all for your support. This was a first time event, so it was a real learning event for all of us.
We were running both a competition and a vending booth. Talk about total confusion for me.
I want to thank my wonderful crew that had a cool heads and kept everything on track.
Thanks LaRayne, Cami, Nikki, Lexi, Pitmasters Bo and Jessie and their families and friends!
You guys did an awesome job!
We tried some new ways of judging and it turned out both good and bad.
We were doing a backyard event that professionals could also participate in.
We tried a new method of scoring that had both good points and bad.
The end results were a definite surprise for all.
Here is the rundown of what transpired:

Boxes: In an effort to equalize the skill level between a pro and a novice, we did not allow any garnishments in the turn in boxes. At the cooks meeting we decided to place foil in the boxes to protect them from the heat of the food. We did this so that the food would be judged on looks of the food only and not on how good the garnishment looked. In professional competitions, judges are told to look at the meat only and not the garnishment. In listing to judges after a comp, they all talk about how the garnishments looked and how it influenced their decisions. I felt that if there were no professional garnishments in the box that all cooks would be on the same level.
Conclusion: This part worked out very well.

Judging:

Chicken: Since all of the judges were folks like the “Mayor of Tremonton City” and had no judging experience, we needed to alter how the boxes would be judged. We tried something new on the appearance category. Since the judges had never seen a bbq turn in box before, they had no idea what one should look like. So in an effort to equalize the skill levels, we did open lids on all of the boxes so that the judges had something to relate to. We asked the judges to look all the boxes at once and rank the appearance of the chicken boxes in order from 10 to 4 based on which piece looked best getting a 10 down to the worst looking getting the 4. We thought that this would help.
This was a big mistake! It took the judges forever to rank the boxes. There were NOT ANY boxes that deserved a score of 4 in appearance! Every box there would have received not less than an 8 in a normal competition. After we finished judging the chicken, we decided as judges that this was not a fair way to judge and would change the appearance scoring on the ribs. The taste and tenderness were scored the same as a regular comp only we used the scoring of 1-10, 10 being the best.
Conclusion: This part did not go well and needs to be changed.

Ribs: This category was changed on the appearance scoring because of the chicken dilemma.
The ribs were done with all entries judged on appearance with open lids at the same time, but the judges were told to rate the boxes on their own merit. They were told that if all of the entries deserved a 10, then give them all a 10. This worked out a lot better! The boxes ALL looked awesome and professional. The remainder of the scores were the same fashion as the previous boxes.
Conclusion: This way works out very well.

The Awards: I was so busy vending, I did a poor job of giving away the prizes. I winged it at the last second and it was a flop. Looking back I should have put all teams in a hat and drawn them out. I feel badly about the way it was done and I will defiantly do it differently in the future!
The Trophies I thought were very nice. There was a small hiccup on our Grand Champion and Reserve Grand. There was a tie score! Being new at this, I asked around and it was decided to do a coin toss for the Grand Champion. We called both teams up on the stage and then let the team with the highest one item score call heads or tails. They wanted heads and heads it was. The Grand Champion award was deserved by both, but we only had one trophy.
Conclusion: Our awards presentation needs some work.

Being the first comp we put on, it went well. Lots of great friends were made and said they would return.
The lady in charge of the city event said we did a great job and said if we want to come back next year, they would love to have us back. Here we go guys, next year, a better comp and we will also be adding a Dutch Oven competition to the event!

I will get the results posted here in a few minutes!

Thank you all so much for the support and friendship!
