Well Alton was smoking a salmon for only a little while. I have seen a smoker made of plywood that is covered in sheet metal. Its for smoking a whole hog.

The box was lined with sheet metal on the inside. It had poles that passes through the ende for handles.

I remember reading somewhere that a guy made a UDS of sorts from an oak whiskey barrel. I don't know how well it worked, but it sure was pretty to look at.

RE: building a smoker
There are several on the smoke ring but the trouble with them is getting them air tight and keeping them air tight, as they need filling with liquid to get the barrel staves to hold tight against each other.

You need to do this every two months or so.

RE: building a smoker
My mom dumped some stove oil down the outhouse hole. Later my grandpa threw his cigar down there. That outhouse smoked pretty good for most the day.....but I don't thing there were any ribs in there.

By the way, go with natural wood. Stay away from glue in plywood.
