Butts Are On - Who's Cookin' What?
Just put about 14 lbs of Boston Butts on the Traeger (with SmokeDaddy attachment). Will put the chicken thighs on about 1500 this afternoon after the butts are wrapped. Already a good day and getting better by the hour. Now, if that grandson will just hold off being born for another 24 hours...maybe I can get some BBQ into his first meal via his momma's milk. Ya think?

Who's up and smokin'?

Cooked Friday evening and night, just a couple of butts for a family get together, made up some Apple Sauerkraut Slaw, an a #10 can of doctored up Bush's baked beans, the kids did a couple of gallons of Frog Eyed salad.

We take it in turns, I did lunch, others did a good filling lasagna, with salad and croutons for diner, today is someone else's turn for lunch and diner and then there will be a farewell breakfast on Monday, it's good to see family and friends that you've not seen in a year or two, kids are growing, kids are getting married and having kids of their own... doesn't time fly when you are living life, (whether having fun or not)! Wink

You got that right. Just yesterday my son was graduating high school. Now, 8 years have passed and he's about to be a father. Early morning smokes get you thinking about such things, eh?

Yep, having fun...most of the time Big Grin

Were on our way up into the mountains for some camping, should be a fun few nights in a tent. Were going to try our first tri tips, over a hole in the ground with some oak for heat.

RE: Butts Are On - Who's Cookin' What?
Today were having some hamburger sliders, with homemade potato rolls and a pasta veggie salad. Tonight the pork butt is going on the smoker for tomorrow afternoon's dinner. Yesterday I made a triple berry cobbler and ice cream for dessert, my sweet tooth got the best of me so I couldn't wait until Monday.

Have a great holiday everyone.

Apple Sauerkraut Slaw, that sounds really good. How would one prepare such a slaw?

RE: Butts Are On - Who's Cookin' What?
Equal amounts of white / red cabbage and Sauerkraut, 1/2 that weight onions / carrots, Green Apples, lemon / lime juice, Miracle Whip, salt and pepper to taste.

e.g.
1lb white cabbage
1lb red cabbage
1lb sauerkraut
1/2lb onion
1/2lb carrots
3 green apples (granny smiths)
lemon / lime juice
Miracle Whip (not Mayo)
Salt and pepper to taste.

Shred or chop white / red cabbage into a bowl.
Drain the Sauerkraut well, add to the cabbage.
Shed the onions and the carrots into the bowl.
Add salt and pepper to taste, stir in well.
Add 3 - 4 heaped tablespoons of Miracle whip
Quarter and core the apples, slice each apple into 16 wedges, put into a different bowl and pour the lemon and lime juice over the apple slices to stop them browning, don't use too much or not enough just use as much as you need to coat both sides of every slice, (you can also juilienne one of the three, if you want the texture of slivers of apple instead of just the wedges).
Then add the apples and their lemon/ lime cover to the bowl with the other ingredients, stir them in, check the salt and pepper content and the Miracle whip.

Serve and enjoy the added crunch of the apples and sauerkraut.

The Miracle whip doesn't appear to be enough when you add it to start, but work the shredded mix for a few moments and it spreads out for you... make it at the beginning of your cook and it will give it time to draw some of the moisture out of the cabbage.

Looking to cook pulled pork for a family reunion of 35. How much pork would be best to cook up? I was thinking two 8lb butts. Where is the best deal around the Layton area?

RE: Butts Are On - Who's Cookin' What?
An 8lb butt will feed 12 to 13 so either get a couple of 9lbs or get 3 x 8lbs, that is a large burger bun full of meat per person.

If you want to do the smaller burger buns or other rolls, you can possibly get away with just 2 butts.

If it's the only mean go with 3 x 8, if you are doing another meat as well you could get away with less of the butts.
