Cabela's venue for a June Utah BBQ Association contest
Utah BBQ Association competition!

Write it down on your calendar there's a contest in the South Parking lot at Cabela's, Pro and Backyard (incorporating Kids Que) divisions.

The Pro division will be Friday 11th of June to turn ins Saturday 12th June.
The entry fee is $100.00 for the 4 meat Pro categories, Chicken, Pork Ribs, Pork & Brisket.
There will be cash and prizes, the cash awards will pay down to 5th place in each category plus Reserve GC and GC.
The cash will come from the entry fees the more that enter the bigger the prize fund pool.

The Backyard division will be cooked Saturday 12 June.
The entry fee is $40.00 for the 2 meat Backyard categories, Chicken and Pork Ribs
There will be a Grand prize for the overall winner, teams must cook both categories to be eligible for the Grand Championship.
There will be awards for each category down to 5th place.
There will also be special awards for the Best Kids Que (Kids Que being defined by participants under 16 years old).

More information, payment options, entry forms will be available soon!

Entry Form now available click the next link!

Entry Form.pdf!

Entry Form.docx! There is a minor glitch with the file, if you are using IE it will read the file as a .zip, the file is actually a .docx Microsoft Office 2007 document, you can click the link and then, click "save as" once it downloads to your computer, rename it from smokeridgeentryform.zip to smokeridgeentryform.docx and it shoul open for you in Word or Open Office Writer.

Map to the Cabela's store location!

No...you don't need to be a paid member to compete. Sometimes you get a discount on entry fees if you are a paid member, but looks like this one is one price fits all.

That sure was good stuff!

So do the "Kid's Que" teams compete against themselves or do they compete against the rest of the Backyard division teams?

Re: Cabela's venue for a June Utah BBQ Association Contest
The kids contest we have had in the past, they just compete in their own division. So it is separate from the "older crowd"
The professional division will cook the 4 meats (chicken, pork ribs, pork shoulder, and beef brisket)
The backyard division will cook on Saturday and (of as right now) cook chicken and pork ribs. The backyard division will be judged in their own division and not against the professional division.

The idea with the backyard division, is to give a low key event for those who want to try and see if they really want to move into the professional division. It gives you and idea of what a competition takes.

That sure was good stuff!

Yep, what he said. The last I can recall from our meeting was the kids group would be up to 14 years old and the regular Back Yard Division would be those older than 14. This is if I remember right. I may need to be corrected on this. The kids will have separate awards than the grown ups. Hope this helps.

Good job, I can't wait to go and visit another contest. Last one I visited was the one downtown last summer. Maybe I will boil some for the backyard contest?

Clarification on the Kid's Que age limit. It is up to age 16 not 14.

Thanks for correcting me Brian! My memory is failing me.

Wow Mike, you sound really excited! Are you going to cook in this one? This would be a perfect one for you.
And no Mike, even with the correction on the ages, you are still to old for the kids category!
Hope to see you there!

Oh my goodness, this is AWESOME!!

I know my 6 year old would LOVE to cook in a kids que event, but I don't know anything about it. What are the guidelines?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Cabela's venue for a June Utah BBQ Association contest
Kids Que will be the same as Backyard Chicken and Ribs, they can compete in one or both, but they most have their own grill / pit or smoker, and they must be the one doing the cooking.

Ribs must be turned in on the bone, chicken can be sliced, pulled, shredded or chopped, there must be at least 6 identifiable portions for each category.

The kids must have a supervising adult, for safety reasons, but the adult must not be directing the kids cook, people seen or heard directing the kids will lead to their expulsion from the contest.

In order to be entered for the Kids Que GC and RGC they must cook both categories, but they can take top honors in either category on it's own.

Re: Cabela's venue for a June Utah BBQ Association contest
Thanks for the info, EZZY!! Might I suggest grilling burgers or something like that? Throwing some chicken and some ribs is a little much for my 6 and 9 year olds..
When will turn-ins happen for the kids que? I ain't gonna fight my 6 year old for cooker space! LOL

I've been lurking! LOL

I'm doing really well, thanks for asking. Smile
Yes, I'll be at the Cabela's cook and I've also signed up for Declo. I've volunteered to judge the FW&I because I will be cooking in Worland the very next weekend. Trying to do both events would be just toooooo much.

I'm looking forward to seeing everybody.

Yes, this is the perfect comp to get your feet wet in! Just bring dry shoes!
If any of you guys are thinking of just starting out, this would be a great opportunity to learn the ropes.
This will have a lower entry fee than most comps and a back yard division for beginners. You will be able to check out what really goes on at a comp.
There is always lots of folks willing to help you out and teach you, although nobody will share their secret recipes. You are on your own there. I know this because I have been trying to get them for years.
Come on down and have some fun!
See you there Mike.
