Congrats to Jay & Vince/Alexa for a great showing yesterday... And to all the other teams that were part of this event... Big Hole, you were knocking on the door... Team MOAB & Hintze's Hog - nice to see both of you doing so well in the overall... And of course, Utah Smoke was right in there, too... T is definitely the "Rib Meister"...

Really do appreciate all the out of state teams that made the trip for this event, especially this year... Dr. Bob (of "OOPS"), it was a pleasure to meet with you and your wife...

Great (but hot) weather... Nice event... Hard to tell how the crowds were "up above"... I saw Tommy from Tommy's Texas BBQ and he said he was busy... Sure looked like they had a lot of "Buck a Cup" pulled pork leftover... :( None the less, thanks to all the cooks who helped with that effort...

It was also really sad to see Gene & Brenda one last time before they head over to Japan... They have been great friends - and I will miss them while they are gone...

Now - just one final question/remark... How does the GC also end up getting last place with his sauce?????

Again - congrats and thanks to everyone...

Thanks to all the teams that helped out this "First Timer"....Even the one that told me the turn in was on 4th south and State.
As far as Buck a Cup goes, the concept was sound and the meat was there but looking at the booth it appeared to be kid's project booth with people sitting behind the table and kids standing in front working on something. There was no sign of food except some warmers to the side. I watched a couple standing behind the kids trying to asked to be helped. Maybe if they do it next time they should recruit some food people to do the selling.

Congrats to everyone for (from my vantage point) was a great event - especially to the GC! Great work! I also want to send a huge shout out to T, Roger from R&R, Mrs Oops (for showing me a bit about presentation boxes) and special thanks to Brian from HQO for allowing me to spend time with ya'll seeing how things are done. I'm fairly certain that I'll jump in on a couple events next year depending on $. Wife says she wants her bathroom remodeled too so we'll see what kind of money is around after that.

Again, thanks to the 4 teams who took their time to teach me a few things - this new guy is very much appreciative!

Hoochie,
Thanks for taking the time to post the results!! I've been running all day and haven't had a chance until now to get online; I appreciate you taking the time to input the data. Thanks to all the teams who attended this event and congratulations to all those who took the walk to the winners circle. I want to thank EVERYONE who was instrumental in helping to pull this competition off -- especially the Gallivan Center staff, Cynthia, Tyler and Talitha; they are all very helpful, energetic and amazing people to associate with. I also want to recognize our KCBS Reps, Ed Roith and Larry King for all of their hard work in our behalf. The Rock-N-Ribs is always a such great event and this year was no exception. Once again, congratulations to all, thank you for allowing me to be a part of such a great group of individuals.

Very Sincerely,

Yo, first of all just let me say how proud I am to be associated with a great group of people. None of us know in life how many more BBQ week ends we have left in our lives, so thanks to all for making this past week end a fun and memorable one. Thanks to Lyle, Talitha, Cynthia, my man Tyler and the crew for another outstanding job. Once again we had a great pot luck, thanks to all that contributed. Thanks to the teams that stepped up and cooked for the buck a cup. Larry Jacobs came up huge for us. Thanks L.J. Thanks to Cris who supplied the ash barrels, and to my guys at Renegade oil for the grease barrels. I must apologize for not knowing that they had delivered the grease barrel early Friday morning, being a decorative grey fiberglass one, which was later exchanged for a plain barrel I missed it completely. Sorry Pikeman. Congrats to the GC Jay who has a special place in my heart. To Vince, Alexa and the boys who are a great people as well, and if you ever get a chance to kick it with them you will see what I'm talking about. Both teams have been an big inspiration to us all, thanks guys. I can't express how proud I am of the local teams, watching you all come along since day one has be refreshing to Becci and I. Keep up the good work, Good luck to Jay, Rhythm and Que and our own Hoochie- Que at the Jack we will be in spirit with you all.

I would like to say that this was a great event. Thank you all so much for everything. To the folks in charge..... Awesome Job! Congrats to all that walked. To all that survived the heat, congratulations. I made some new friends this trip. Seems like every time I go to one of these, I meet new friends. This is a totaly awesome bunch of folks.
I did learn one important lesson this trip. If you go to open the lid on the ash barrel, it has a locking ring on it and the lid is bulging, DO NOT JUST POP THE RING OPEN! Have you ever heard of a pressure cooker exploding? Well, so do ash barrels! Chris, thank you so much for supplying the barrels. It was very nice to have a place to dump them. Maybe next time we could drill a small hole in the lid for safety reasons???
Does anyone have any pictures? I used to love looking at all the pictures that everyone would post.
All I have are the pics of our stuff. I didn't think to take the camera when I went walking around.
Also, Thanks to my team members, it was nice to have the ladies come with us this time.

See you all soon,
Mike

I would just like to say thank you to all of you... What a great group of people. There are not many events that all the competitors make you feel like family. Thanks to Lyle, Hoochie, Brian, Chris, T, M.O.A.B, Dragon, Jamie, Rod, Roger And especially to the Ladys of R-&-R for saying they would like to see us win something... and to everyone else who has offered us advice...Without all your help we would not have gotten any calls. Again thank you all...Looking forward to the next competition.

Good point on the ash can safety Mike, while on that same subject, I went back on Sunday to pick up the cans, and one was there, but the second that had been down near the judging room was no where to be found.

Anyone who took it for safekeeping can let me know where to pick it up from, as I want to prepare them for the next contest, and hate putting my hand in my pocket for something I had already paid out on!

Update on the barrel saga... the second barrel was moved inside somewhere by the Gallivan Center folks, and I can go pick it up tomorrow.

Thanks for all who contributed to make the competition as good as it was, definitely one to put on the calendar for next year 08/20/10 - 08/21/10.

Some of you may have heard me say that one of my favorite drives that we make to go to contests is the one between Phoenix and Salt Lake City. The scenery is beautiful, especially on US 89 between Page, AZ and when we hit I-15 from UT-20. But it's also a favorite of mine because we know we're going to a contest where we'll be among some utterly fantastic folks. Everyone should be so lucky as to come to Utah for a competition!

Big time congratulations go out to my good friend, Jaybird, for returning to the winner's circle and taking home the top prize. Jay, we've watched you cook at each of your events this year, slowly putting that puzzle back together and it sure was a thrill to be the first to congratulate you after they called out "Otis and The Bird" and Grand Champion!!! You and Monica have inspired not only us but I'm sure many other teams and you continue to inspire as well as honor her memory. We're honored to have been there share in the joy!

Alexa and I appreciate all the kind words and compliments we have received here as well as those paid to us all weekend long. You folks are really so thoughtful and we can't thank you enough for making us feel so at home. As I said, it's always a pleasure to compete against and alongside all of you. We also want to thank our wonderful sponsors, Rock's Bar-B-Que, Home of the Stoker and the Trinity Laser Training Institute. The Stoker keeps our pits humming along and just the right temperature and Trinity provides us with the trailer we use to transport our gear from home to event and back again. Thanks to both of you for your very generous support.

There were some great stories this weekend, not the least of which was the awesome performance by the Smoke Peddlers. Those boys hit the Top 5 with Chicken (2nd), Ribs, (2nd), Pork (3rd) and finished in 3rd Place Overall. You guys had a great weekend and no one had more fun at that Awards Ceremony than you did!

Big Hole Barbecue also scored this weekend finishing in 4th Place Overall and placing all four meats into the Top 10! (10th Chicken, 9th Ribs, 4th Pork, 5th Brisket) That's no small feat and goes to show that consistency across the categories is going to be rewarded with a very strong placing. You two run a tight team and it won't be long before the top prizes are going to sit in your trophy case.

Team M.O.A.B locked up the 5th Overall spot with a 4th Place call in Ribs and a 3rd Place call in Brisket. Norm said it was an honor for them to be up on the stage with us during the Brisket awards but the truth is that the honor was ours. You folks are a tough team and you should be darn proud of what you have accomplished. We're always happy to see you and it's good to know that you'll be putting your barbeque taste buds to the test in Mesquite, NV in a couple of weeks.

Let's see, who else had some great calls this weekend? Well, I've got to start with T & Becci for hitting it big with 1st Place in Ribs. T brought one by after Rib turn ins were over and it was a thing of beauty. Considering that it was clearly one that didn't make the box, I can understand why they scored so well. Nicely done, Funkmaster T & Lady Becci!

How about the crew at Hintze's Hog? They had a great day including a 2nd Place call in Brisket with a score of 171.4286! That means they were hitting 8s and 9s from all the judges and that's tough to do, especially in Brisket! Great job!

The Sons of the Pioneers would sure have been proud to tumble along with Tumbleweed Barbecue at this event. They finished the event in 10th Place Overall and had calls of 7th Ribs, 10th Pork and 7th Brisket. I said it earlier and this is once again proof that consistency is what leads to great competition results. This is exactly what we all strive to do. By the way, that fish you cooked up for the pot luck was awesome too!

And speaking of the pot luck, was that something or what?!? Thank you so much for hosting us out of staters and I hope we appropriately returned the kindness with our Jacked Up Arnies. That was a delicious spread of food and I just didn't have enough room to taste it all, (hard to believe, I know)! Some of my favorites were the fish, the green chile, the wings, (nice sauce) and, of course, T's killer sausage/potato dish! It was great and once again thank you.

A super shout out goes to Lyle, Cynthia, Tyler and Talitha, the people at the Gallivan Center, our KCBS Reps Ed Roith and Larry King, the Utah BBQ Association and all the other people who worked so hard to make this event possible. Thank you so much! We really appreciate all your efforts!

Alexa and I would also like to say that we really enjoyed spending time shooting the bull after the event with T, Becci and Jaybird. This is often the only time we have to really relax and socialize at competitions and it sure is fun to do, especially with great friends.

And last, but certainly not least, congratulations to team Hoochie-Que. You're goin' to The Jack, baby!!!! Utah will have fine representation there in the form of your team and you're going to love being a part of the greatest barbeque competition in the world. We're looking forward to seeing you there and sharing the experience!

Thanks again, everyone and let's do it again next year!

Now if T would just come and cook for me and my wife at Mesquite, I guess Vince will have to buy steak at the resort? LOL
